Tip of the Week – Understanding the power of attachments in Salesforce

Tip of the Week – Understanding the power of attachments in Salesforce

Let’s face it, no matter what you do to convert your processes from reliance on static files to nice, clean, fluid data, you’re never going to be able to escape the need for attachments. There’s contracts and agreements, photos, hand-written surveys and reports, bank statements, legal documents, and more. You may already have a file sharing system that everyone has down to a science – maybe Dropbox or a folder on your server, and if you’ve been working with that for years, you may think “why do I need to bother with attachments in Salesforce?” Well, it’s not just about file storage; attachments in Salesforce are so much more than that!

The more you use Salesforce, the more it becomes the central repository for all your business processes. Keeping records up to date means not having to pass around paper files for clients and deals. Making sure the Status matches the current status of a record allows managers to keep on top of their whole department. It’s no different for documents. Uploading an application to a record means that whoever is working on that record has what they need, and the file stays with the record all the way through the process. Adding attachments to Chatter lets your team collaborate, share, and work together. Uploading files to Salesforce lets you share important documents with your team and instantly get a new version out to everyone who needs it. I recommend you check out the Salesforce help page on the Differences between Files, Salesforce CRM Content, Salesforce Knowledge, Documents, and Attachments to get some more information on how to leverage Salesforce’s file sharing tools!

Tip of the Week – Get the Salesforce mobile experience from your desktop with the Salesforce1 Simulator

Tip of the Week – Get the Salesforce mobile experience from your desktop with the Salesforce1 Simulator

Salesforce1 Simulator

One of my favorite things about Salesforce is the immediate feedback. Whether you’re an end user, system administrator, or developer, every update is registered almost instantly. There’s rarely a need to wait for anything you do to be reflected in the system, meaning rapid development and seamless upgrades and improvements. But if your team uses Salesforce1 extensively, admins and developers have the challenge of having to bounce between their desktop and mobile devices constantly to see how their updates effect the user experience. You can use the standard mobile simulator, but unfortunately it doesn’t always give an accurate view of what your team is seeing on their smartphones, which can be frustrating in a high paced work environment. What you need is a way to get an accurate view of the user experience without having to pick up a phone. Enter the Chrome Salesforce1 Simulator!

The Salesforce1 Simulator gives you a look into the UI of Salesforce1 straight from your desktop. Framed by a simulated phone or tablet, what you see is what you get. With this app, you can make your updates, refresh, and see exactly what your team in the field will see in an instant. This simple tool brings the immediate feedback I love about Salesforce to your mobile development. And the price tag of $free makes it a no-brainer for any Salesforce administrator or developer to add it to their toolbox. Check it out!

Tip of the Week – Salesforce1 is better than ever with 7.0 upgrade

Tip of the Week – Salesforce1 is better than ever with 7.0 upgrade

Salesforce1 has been a game changer since its release last year. Since then, many great apps have been released to help leverage the full power of the new mobile Salesforce. Salesforce recently released version 7.0 of Salesforce1, bringing with it a number of powerful new features and UI upgrades.

To begin with, performance has found a major improvement with page loads happening much faster. An action bar has been added to the bottom of the page to allow you to have quick access to the things which are most important to you. Records are easier to navigate than ever before, and now, with just a few quick swipes, you have the ability to perform a number of actions in line with the data. Best of all, dashboards in Salesforce1 have gotten a major overhaul and are now almost as powerful as dashboards on your desktop computer. For more on the latest upgrade check out this link and don’t forget to download the latest version from the iTunes App Store or Google Play today.

One of the best things about Salesforce is the ease of customization. Your page layout isn’t working for you? Click Edit Layout, drag and drop fields where you need them, click Save, and your life just got easier. However, if you need a fully custom UI, it’s not so simple. You’ll need a developer every time a field is out of place or a margin is a hair too narrow. That’s where Skuid comes in.

Build a killer user interface for any app on any device with Skuid: the scalable kit for user interface design. Drag & drop prebuilt interface components to create powerful desktop and mobile apps. Boost adoption & productivity and lower your costs.

Tip of the Week – Maps in Salesforce will be a game changer Spring ’15

Tip of the Week – Maps in Salesforce will be a game changer Spring ’15

Maps are cool

More than just communicating with clients and tracking sales, Salesforce serves as a powerful central repository for client information. Salesforce gives you standard Address fields on all Lead, Contact, and Account records to easily store addresses, and has even released a feature that lets you get directions in Salesforce1 with the click of a button. But data is only as valuable as its quality (remember, junk in, junk out), and only if you can do something useful with it. What if you need to show a map on a record (“Loch Big Ben” would be an embarrassing mistake…)? What if your users are prone to typos or are missing information when entering addresses and need some suggestions? You’re going to have to turn to an expensive third-party app or a lot of heavy development to give this kind of powerful feature to your users. Come Spring ’15, however, maps in Salesforce are coming to you as part of the scheduled update!

What will you get when this update comes your way? Here’s the latest scoop from Salesforce:

  • Display of map images where any standard address field is sufficiently populated. This functionality will be available through the desktop interface and the Salesforce1 Mobile app.
  • Standard Visualforce components for map creation.
  • Address suggestion and auto-completion available when editing address fields.

Get ready for this awesome upgrade and let us know how you’re going to use the new maps in Salesforce when Spring ’15 drops!
